RO water is water that has been pushed through a reverse osmosis membrane, which holds back most of the dissolved salts and minerals. Across the UAE it turns up under apartment kitchen sinks, in villa plant rooms, in office pantries and behind the counter of cafés and hotel kitchens. This guide is for homeowners, tenants, office managers and kitchen operators in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the northern emirates who want a straight answer: what RO water is, why UAE buildings use it, how the final water is set to taste right, and when a softener or carbon filter would do the job instead.
TL;DR
- RO water is low in dissolved solids because a membrane has removed most salts and minerals.
- In the UAE, the bigger influence on water quality is often inside the building: rooftop tanks, pumps and long pipe runs.
- Under Dubai's public health order, the occupant is responsible for keeping a building's drinking water tanks clean and safe.
- At home, RO gives drinking and cooking water from your own tap. In business, it serves drinking points, coffee machines, ice makers and steam ovens.
- If the inlet water is very hard, fit a softener before the RO, otherwise the membrane will block sooner.
- We either blend RO water with filtered inlet water at installation or fit a remineralisation cartridge, so it reaches a target mineral range.

What is RO water, in plain terms?
Think of the membrane as an extremely fine sieve that works on dissolved substances, not just particles. Pressure forces water molecules through it. Salts, hardness minerals and many other dissolved substances stay on the other side and are rinsed away to drain. The water you collect is RO water, also called permeate.
Because it is so low in dissolved solids, RO water reads very low on a TDS meter. Our guide to TDS and ppm in the UAE explains what those readings mean and how to take them.
Why UAE buildings add their own treatment
Mains water in the UAE is treated before it enters the network. Quality at your tap, though, depends heavily on what happens inside the building.
Many towers and villas store water in tanks, often on the roof, before it reaches the outlets. Summer heat warms that water, sediment settles, and covers and seals wear. Dubai's Local Order No. 11 of 2003 on public health makes the position clear: an occupant is responsible for the cleanliness and safety of the drinking water tanks in their building, and the authorities can act where drinking water is found to be contaminated or unfit.
The Gulf standard for unbottled drinking water, GSO 149:2021, was approved as a UAE technical regulation, UAE.S GSO 149:2021, by Cabinet Resolution No. 22 of 2022. It is the benchmark for drinking water quality. An RO unit gives a defined, consistent quality at specific outlets, alongside keeping the tank and pipework in good order.
Water filtration by reverse osmosis: inside the unit
Whether it sits under an apartment sink or in a hotel back-of-house, an RO unit typically has:
- A softener, where the inlet water is very hard, so scale does not block the membrane early.
- A sediment filter to stop sand and rust reaching the membrane.
- A carbon stage to take out chlorine, which can damage the membrane.
- A pump and membrane, where the separation happens.
- A blending or remineralisation stage to set the final water.
- Monitoring, such as conductivity readouts, filter-change alarms and leak protection.
RO water at home: apartments and villas
Plenty of UAE households still carry home 5-gallon bottles or packs from the supermarket. A mains-fed RO unit in the kitchen replaces that with drinking and cooking water from your own tap. It suits:
- Apartments in towers with rooftop tanks, where you do not control the tank yourself.
- Villas that want treated water at the kitchen tap, the fridge water line and the ice maker.
- Home coffee lovers, since low-scale water protects the machine.
The Imperial RO is designed for under-sink installation in homes and apartments as well as cafés and offices. At only 10.5 cm deep it fits standard kitchen cupboards, and it has Wi-Fi monitoring and a display showing water quality in real time. If limescale is marking showers, taps and glassware right through the villa, a Regal water softener treats the whole supply, with RO on the kitchen tap. Our home water solutions page brings the options together.
RO water at work: offices and kitchens
Offices. Mains-fed drinking points with RO remove bottle deliveries, storage and handling. Size for morning arrival and lunchtime peaks, plan a drain connection, and in a multi-tenant tower ask the facilities provider for their tank cleaning records.
Kitchens. Here RO water is mostly about the equipment:
| Equipment | What goes wrong without treatment | How RO water helps |
|---|---|---|
| Espresso machines | Scale in boilers, unstable extraction | Lets you set a consistent mineral target |
| Combi and steam ovens | Scale on steam generators, service callouts | Very low hardness reaching the generator |
| Ice machines | Cloudy ice, scaled evaporator | Clearer ice, less descaling |
| Glasswashers | Spots and streaks on glasses | Spotless rinse |

Before you choose treatment: three checks
A lot of water complaints in UAE buildings start upstream of the tap. Work through these first, so any treatment you add performs as it should:
- Ask about the tank. In a villa, check the rooftop tank is clean and sealed. In a tower, ask the facilities provider for their tank cleaning records. A dirty tank clogs any filter downstream.
- See where the scale is. If limescale is marking showers, taps and glassware right through the property, a softener treats the whole supply. For larger buildings, see our commercial water softener guide. RO then serves the kitchen tap and the equipment.
- Name the problem. If chlorine taste or smell at one tap is the only issue, a carbon filter handles it at a lower cost.
Blending and remineralisation
Pure permeate can taste flat, and very low-mineral water can be aggressive towards some metals. The World Health Organization notes that desalinated water must be stabilised or remineralised before distribution to reduce its corrosive nature. The same logic applies in your kitchen, and we handle it in one of two ways:
- Blending at installation. Our team blends the RO water with filtered inlet water, adjusting the mix until it reaches the target characteristics for your drinking water or equipment.
- Remineralisation cartridge. We supply a cartridge that adds minerals back and brings the output into a target remineralised range.
The result is water that tastes fresh and stays consistent, set for how you use it.
Drainage and installation
Every RO unit sends some water to drain, carrying away what the membrane removed. Plan for:
- A drain point close to the unit, under the sink or in the plant room.
- Leak protection, especially in apartments where a leak can reach the neighbours below.
- A softener ahead of the RO if your inlet water is very hard.
- If you reuse reject water for tasks such as plant watering, a separate, labelled line that never connects to drinking water pipework.
A maintenance routine that works in UAE conditions
- Change pre-filters on time. Warm water can speed up biological growth in filters.
- Keep any softener ahead of the RO serviced.
- Check the TDS readout monthly. Rising numbers mean the membrane needs attention.
- Sanitise units that stand idle, for example over the summer break or Eid.
- Keep tank cleaning records alongside your RO service records.
How long a membrane lasts depends on the quality of your inlet water. Our guide to RO membrane maintenance in the UAE explains when to replace one. Our maintenance plans schedule filter and membrane changes so nothing is missed.
Frequently asked questions
What is RO water?
Water that has passed through a reverse osmosis membrane. Most dissolved salts and minerals have been removed, so it reads very low on a TDS meter.
Can I fit RO in a rented apartment?
Under-sink units are compact and connect to the cold supply and a drain. Check with your landlord before any plumbing work.
Is RO water the same as distilled water?
No. Both are low in minerals, but distillation boils and condenses water, while RO uses pressure and a membrane. RO water is then blended or remineralised.
Do I still need to clean my building's water tank if I have RO?
Yes. In Dubai the occupant is responsible for keeping drinking water tanks clean and safe. A dirty tank also shortens the life of RO filters and membranes.
Do I need a softener before an RO unit?
If your inlet water is very hard, yes. Hardness minerals scale the membrane and block it sooner.
