Do You Need a Water Softener for Hard Water in the UAE? Sizing the Regal 100, 150 and 200

Dubai mains water is soft, so when does a softener pay off? Tanker and well sites, and machines with tight limits. Here is how to size the Regal 100, 150 and 200.

Regal 150 water softener installed under a stainless steel worktop in a café back-of-house area, with braided water hoses, a drain to the waste pipe and a plug-in power supply, next to a glasswasher

Most of the UAE gets soft, desalinated mains water, so many owners assume a softener is never needed. Then a café on a tanker supply in Al Quoz, or a villa on a well in Al Ain, finds white crust on the glasswasher and a coffee machine that keeps throwing errors. A water softener for hard water fixes that, as long as it matches the site. Our Regal 100, 150 and 200 are compact units for exactly these smaller jobs. This guide explains when one makes sense in the Emirates, how to choose between the three sizes, and when another kind of treatment is the better buy.

TL;DR

  • Dubai mains water is soft. Hardness problems usually come from tanker water, wells, or machines with tight water limits.
  • The three Regal models are rated for 1.8, 3 and 5 m³ of soft water between regenerations, from 10, 15 and 20 litres of resin.
  • Work out what the softener actually feeds each day. A single glasswasher needs far less than a whole villa.
  • All three sit in the same 270 by 430 mm space; only the height changes.
  • If your issue is taste, chlorine or high TDS rather than scale, filtration or reverse osmosis is the better fit.

Is UAE water hard?

Usually not at the mains. Desalinated water leaves the plant with very little calcium or magnesium, and it is remineralised only lightly before distribution. DEWA's 2025 sustainability report gives a typical hardness of about 60.7 mg/L in Dubai, which is soft by most measures (DEWA Sustainability Report 2025). In Abu Dhabi, drinking water quality is set by the Department of Energy's regulations (DoE Water Quality Regulations 2025).

The picture changes once water leaves the network. Many buildings store it in roof or ground tanks before it reaches the taps. Some farms, labour camps, remote resorts and villas run on wells or tanker deliveries, and that water can carry much more hardness than the mains. Our explainer on TDS and ppm in the UAE shows how to read a water report.

When a water softener for hard water pays off here

Three situations come up again and again.

Tanker or well supply. If your water does not come straight from DEWA, SEWA, ADDC or another utility main, get it tested by an accredited laboratory. Results well above the mains figure mean scale will build quickly on anything heated.

Machines with their own limits. Some glasswashers, combi ovens and espresso machines list a maximum hardness in the manual, and the warranty may depend on it. Even moderately hard water can sit above that line.

Heated equipment that scales anyway. Steam ovens and boilers concentrate minerals as water evaporates, so they can scale on water that seems soft at the tap.

If none of these apply, a softener may add little. We would rather tell you that than sell one.

Regal sizes and figures

The range shares one Clack control valve with a mixing valve and up-flow proportional regeneration. Put simply, the unit uses only as much brine as the used resin needs. The figures come from our datasheets.

Regeneration runs for 80 to 110 minutes. The datasheets give about 1.2 kg of salt each time for the Regal 100 and about 1.6 kg for the Regal 200.

Capacity is quoted at a reference hardness. Tanker water that is twice as hard will roughly halve the volume between regenerations, so size with your test result, not a guess.

Sizing example: a Dubai bar on tanker water

This is an illustration only. Use your own numbers.

  • A glasswasher uses 2 litres a cycle and runs 150 cycles on a Friday night: 300 litres.
  • An ice machine and a coffee machine on the same line add about 80 litres.
  • Total through the softener: roughly 380 litres, or 0.38 m³ a day.

At the reference hardness, a Regal 100 would regenerate about every four to five days, and a Regal 200 about every 13 days. If the tanker water tests much harder, both figures shrink.

Pick the 200 if the bar is busy all week or more machines are planned. The 100 suits a quieter site with little space. Check the ice machine and coffee machine manuals, as some makers want a little hardness left in, which the mixing valve allows.

Installation in UAE buildings

The footprint does not change between models, so height usually decides. The Regal 100 at 469 mm fits under most bar counters. The Regal 200 at 741 mm is better in a back store or plant cupboard.

Heat matters. The datasheets want inlet water between 4 and 30 °C. Water from an exposed roof tank in August can run hotter than that. Where possible, feed the softener from a cooler line, keep it out of direct sun and away from hot equipment, and tell us about your tank so we can plan the install.

Our connection document for the Regal range asks for:

  • a 100 micron sediment prefilter, which protects the valve from tank and tanker sediment
  • isolation valves and a bypass, so the bar keeps running during servicing
  • a drain point with an air gap for regeneration water
  • a power socket within reach (about 30 W)

Other inlet limits on the datasheets include hardness up to 750 mg/L as calcium carbonate and iron below 0.2 mg/L. Well water can exceed the iron figure, so send any lab results first.

Keep one tap on unsoftened water for drinking and cooking. The softened line is for machines.

When to pick filtration or RO instead

Our datasheets call the Regal 100, 150 and 200 a home range. They suit villas, apartments and light commercial duty such as a bar glasswasher or a small clinic. A hotel kitchen or a busy restaurant needs bigger, twin-cylinder equipment. Our commercial water softener specification guide for the UAE explains those options, and we cover building plant in our post on water softeners for commercial buildings in the UAE. You can browse every water softener for hard water in the range.

On soft mains water, the real complaint is often taste, chlorine or a tank that needs cleaning. A softener will not help with any of those. Carbon filtration or reverse osmosis will, and our guide to what RO water is explains the difference.

Any softener needs care. Our Comprehensive Maintenance plans include salt checks, prefilter changes and valve settings through the hot months.

FAQs

Do I need a water softener in Dubai?

On DEWA mains, usually not. You may need one on tanker or well water, or where a machine's manual sets a hardness limit your water exceeds.

Which Regal suits a small bar?

One glasswasher and one coffee machine on moderately hard tanker water often suit a Regal 100 or 150. Choose the 200 if the site is busy or growing.

Will a softener fix the taste of tank water?

No. A softener only removes hardness. For taste and odour, use carbon filtration, and have the tank itself cleaned.

Can the softener sit on the roof?

Not ideally. Inlet water must stay at or below 30 °C, and direct sun shortens the life of the cabinet. An indoor plant space is better.

What does the install need?

A drain with an air gap, a nearby socket, a sediment prefilter, and a 270 by 430 mm space at the height of your chosen model.

Not sure it's hardness?

Send us your water source, any lab report and your machine list. We will tell you whether a Regal fits, or whether filtration or RO would serve you better. Get in Touch with our UAE team.
