Water purification in the UAE starts from a good base. DEWA in Dubai and the utilities in Abu Dhabi supply desalinated, disinfected water. Yet anyone who has run an office on the 30th floor knows the tap can still taste of chlorine one week and look cloudy the next. The reason is usually what happens inside the building. This guide explains which contaminants turn up in UAE buildings, which way to purify water removes each one, and where a filter cannot help.
TL;DR
- UAE mains water is desalinated and disinfected. Most problems start in building tanks and pipes.
- Dubai Municipality makes the building owner responsible for water quality from the connection to the outlet.
- Carbon fixes chlorine taste. Sediment filters fix cloudiness. UV handles bacteria. RO handles dissolved salts and metals.
- Microplastics are best reduced by RO or ultrafiltration membranes.
- Purification is the last step. Clean tanks and short, cool pipe runs come first.

Where UAE water picks up contaminants
DEWA produces most of Dubai's drinking water by desalinating seawater at Jebel Ali. It then remineralises and disinfects it. DEWA says its laboratory samples the network daily and that the water meets World Health Organization standards. In Abu Dhabi, the Department of Energy regulates the water sector.
Inside the building, the picture changes. Most towers store water in a ground tank, pump it to a rooftop or intermediate tank, then feed it down to each floor. Dubai Municipality's Technical Guidelines for Quality of Unbottled Drinking Water, issued in September 2024, treat everything after the connection as the building's water network. They ask owners to clean and disinfect tanks at least twice a year, inspect them monthly and keep cold water below 20°C at outlets.
That last rule is hard to meet in August. Warm, still water loses its residual chlorine, which lets biofilm build up in tanks, long branch pipes and floors left empty between tenants. Our article Can you drink tap water in Dubai? walks through the building checks.
Water purification methods compared
| Method | Purifies water of | Leaves behind | Typical UAE use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sediment filter | Sand, rust, tank scale and debris | Chlorine, taste, salts, microbes | First stage after a tank. Protects everything else. |
| Activated carbon | Chlorine taste and smell, many organic chemicals | Salts, hardness, microbes | Under-sink filters, dispensers, boiling and chilled taps. |
| Reverse osmosis | Dissolved salts, metals, most microplastics, most microbes | Needs pre-filters; produces a reject stream | Coffee shops, kitchens, villas wanting low-TDS water. |
| Ultrafiltration | Particles, most microplastics, bacteria | Dissolved salts and chlorine | Where clarity matters but minerals should stay. |
| UV | Inactivates bacteria and viruses | Removes nothing; needs clear water | Final safeguard on stored water. |
The table is a starting point. Real performance depends on the cartridge, flow and service intervals.
Contaminant by contaminant
Chlorine
Chlorine is added to protect water in the network, and some can remain at the tap. A purify water filter with activated carbon removes the taste and smell. Under a tap or dispenser, a carbon cartridge is usually all you need for this.
Cloudiness and sediment
Cloudy water after a hot spell or tank work usually points to the tank or the pipes. A sediment filter clears it, but ask when the tanks were last cleaned. A filter that clogs quickly is a warning sign.
Bacteria
Stored water that has lost its chlorine can support bacteria. UV inactivates them without chemicals. It goes after the sediment stage, because particles shield microbes from the light. Our article on UV disinfection versus chemical treatment explains the trade-offs.
Dissolved salts and metals
Desalinated water is low in minerals, but building pipework and tank materials can add metals, and TDS varies by area. RO is the stage that removes dissolved salts and metals. Our guide to TDS and ppm in UAE water shows how to read a meter, and What is RO water? covers the membrane in more depth.

Microplastics
Microplastics are plastic particles smaller than 5 millimetres, shed by larger plastics, synthetic fabrics and some cosmetics. More UAE offices now ask about them when they plan drinking water.
The World Health Organization's 2019 review found that, on the limited information available, microplastics in drinking water do not appear to pose a health risk at current levels. It called for more research. If you want to purify water of them as a precaution, membranes work best: RO and ultrafiltration block particles much smaller than most microplastics. A fine carbon block traps some; a basic sediment cartridge only the larger ones.
Choosing a purification set-up
- Office kitchen or meeting floor: sediment and carbon at a mains-fed dispenser or filtered tap. A RoyalFlow tap gives boiling, chilled and filtered water from one outlet.
- Café or restaurant: sediment, carbon and RO with the right mineral balance for the coffee and ice equipment. See commercial water filter systems in the UAE.
- Villa: whole-house sediment and carbon after the tank, with UV if water is stored for long periods, and RO at the kitchen tap.
- Tower or hotel: purification after the tanks, alongside the tank cleaning and sampling Dubai Municipality requires.
Any purification set-up is only as good as its upkeep. Our maintenance service keeps filters, lamps and membranes on schedule. For whole-site options, see our water purification filter housings.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best water purification method for UAE tap water?
There is no single best method. For taste, use carbon. For cloudiness, add sediment. For dissolved salts or metals, use RO. For stored water, add UV.
Why does my tap water in Dubai smell of chlorine?
Chlorine is added to protect the water in the network, and some reaches the tap. A carbon filter removes the smell.
Does a water filter purify water completely?
No single filter does. Each stage removes certain things. A combination matched to the problem works best.
Do I still need to clean my building's water tank if I have a filter?
Yes. Dubai Municipality's guideline requires tank cleaning and inspection whatever filters you use.
Does RO remove microplastics?
Yes. The RO membrane blocks particles far smaller than most microplastics.
